Tumor Risk Four Times Greater for Rural Cell Phone Users

Nic Fleming, Science Correspondence for The Telegraph - UK wrote an article referencing Prof Kjell Hansson Mild, a biologist at ÷rebro University, Sweden. In the article Fleming quotes Prof Mild saying, "Mobile phones can use up to 1,000 times more power when they are far away from a base station."

Prof Mild and Prof Lennart Hardell, also at ÷rebro University, whose research is published today in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, identified 1,429 people living in central Sweden aged 20 to 80 diagnosed with brain tumours between January 1997 and June 2000, and matched them with a control group.

Those who lived in the countryside who had used digital mobile phones for more than a year were 56 per cent more likely to have been diagnosed with a brain tumour than town and city dwellers.

Among those who had used a digital mobile for more than five years, those in rural areas were three-and-a half times more likely to have a tumour than those in urban areas. When those in both groups who had used their phones the most were compared, the risk was four times greater in rural areas.

Don't Be So Sure Your Cell Phone is Safe

Bottom Line Daily Health News, November 10, 2008: Bottom Line Daily Health News contacted Dr. Ronald B. Heberman, the founding director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute concerning the memo he sent to his faculty, staff, as well as to his friends and family, advising them to limit cell phone use based on his interpretation of recent research, some of which is as yet unpublished. While acknowledging that the connection between cell phones and brain tumors is still inconclusive, he says some studies have found that the phones emit radiofrequency energy, a form of electromagnetic radiation, that may damage DNA and could be harmful. Though never intended for such widespread distribution, his memo brought accolades from scientists in the fields of cancer and cancer epidemiology research.
NOT SAFE IN EUROPE, NOT SAFE HERE EITHER
The article stated: “I called Dr. Herberman to learn more about what happened. He told me that his communiqué was prompted by publication of several studies and advisories in Europe -- he felt strongly that the findings were important. Two studies in particular caught his attention. One, conducted in Sweden, showed clear biological effects, particularly brain tumors, after 10 or more years of cell phone use. The other was a French study that showed that the brains of young children (between five and eight years of age in this research) absorb considerable amounts of radiation from cell phones when they are held up to their ears, much more so than adults. Meanwhile, cell phone use among people of all ages -- kids most especially -- continues to grow.”
Dr. Herberman's memo included "10 practical suggestions for the safe use of cell phones, developed by a committee of international experts, of which he is a member.” The suggestions included:
1. Do not allow children under 10 to use cell phone.
2. Hold phone as far away from your body as you can.
3. Use text messaging.
4. Etc.

Taiwanese Government Urged to Dissuade Teenagers from using Cell Phones

Central News Agency English News on October 7, 2008 reported: "The Taiwan Electromagnetic Radiation Hazard Protection and Control Association (TEPCA) presented evidence showing 89.6% of senior high school students surveyed used cell phones and that, of the 33 types of mobile phones marketed in the country, 60% of them released electromagnetic radiation 1 million times higher than the background level. The association said that although cell phones have become a necessary device in modern life, industrial countries, including Britain, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy and Russia, have all advised children, teenagers and pregnant women to refrain from using cell phones out of health concerns."

Newsweek, "Kids, Cell Phones and Brain Cancer"

Newsweek, August 9, 2008: "Recent headlines have reported new concerns about the links between cell-phone use and brain cancer." The article says that in July 2008 the "Toronto Department of Public Health advised teenagers and young children to limit their cell-phone use, and Dr. Ronald Herberman, the Director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, sent out a memo urging his colleagues and their children to do the same." In addition, Dr. Keith Black, the head of neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles said, "It is not wise for us, at this point, to just assume this is a safe device", referring to cell phones. Newsweek, "Get Your Sperm Moving"

Newsweek, February 26, 2008: This article states, "Anything that makes the body unhealthy--a disease, toxins, excessive alcohol--will hurt fertility." The article gives tips on what men can do to improve their chances of conceiving. Dr. Peter Schegel, chairman of urology at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York states, "There's also some evidence linking cell-phone radiation with alterd sperm cells in men, so don't live on the cell phone and keep the device in your jacket or holstered to your belt rather than in your front pants pocket." Can Cell Phones Trigger Alzheimer's

The feature article in "Total Health Breakthroughs" from 9/19/08, "Can Cell Phones Really Trigger Alzheimer's". The article refers to "recent news out of the prestigious University of Pittsburgh Cancer Center warning of cell phone risk to your immune system and bone marrow." The article goes on to say that the above referenced study "revealed that the electromagnetic radiation emitted from cell phones may pose a serious risk for developing brain cancer, as well as eye cancer and acoustic neuromas, a benign tumor of the nerve in the ear leading to deafness, which needs surgery to be removed."

The article states that, "as earlier published paper revealed that cell phone radiation kills brain cells that are associated with learning and memory, and may therefore trigger Alzheimer's."

The article clearly states, "to some people this research is very controversial." "To others, it is what's called emerging science and is in the same place where the knowledge about cigarettes was--say 40 years ago."

Mobile Phone use 'Raises children's risk of brain cancer fivefold'

A news article out of the UK today reports that, "Alarming new research from Sweden on the effects of radiation raises fears that today's youngsters face an epidemic of the disease in later life." It goes on to say; "Children and teenagers are five times more likely to get brain cancer if they use mobile phones."

The article also reports that, "Last week the European Parliament voted 522 to 16 to urge ministers across Europe to bring in stricter limits for exposure to radiation from mobile and cordless phones, Wi-fi and other devices, partly because children are especially vulnerable to them. They are more at risk because their brains and nervous systems are still developing and because-since their heads are smaller and their skulls are thinner-the radiation penetrates deeper into their brains."

Cleveland Clinic: Phones left on talk mode in pockets can hurt quality of sperm

A study by the Cleveland Clivic was aired this morning on CNN regarding the "Effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic waves (RF-EMW) from cellular phones on human ejaculated semen: an in vitro pilot study". The article's conclusion states that: "Radiofrequency electromagnetic waves emitted from cell phones may lead to oxidative stress in human semen. We speculate that keeping the cell phone in a trouser pocket in talk mode may negatively affect spermatozoa and impair male fertility."
