A doctoral dissertation found that groups of genes involved with behaviour and memory undergo changes due to repeated doses of radiation from mobile phones, the Sydsvenskan newspaper reports.
Doctoral candidate Henrietta Nittby and her adviser, Leif G Salford, are in agreement that studies involving mobile phones must continue.
Nearly a decade ago, Salford was involved in a separate study which revealed that the electromagnetic radiation from mobile telephones created openings in the blood-brain barrier.
In addition Nittby discovered that, while individual genes didn’t change, groups of genes in brain cells involved with behaviour and memory did display a number of small changes

Mobile Phones and Brain Tumors-A Public Health Concern

This paper follows 14 months of objective research by the author involving the critical review of over 100 sources. The paper highlights an emerging global public health concern.
Exposure is long-term
A malignant brain tumour represents a life-ending diagnosis in the vast
majority of those diagnosed. To date at least 8 comprehensive clinical studies internationally and one long-term meta-analysis, for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumours.
Taken together, the data presented compellingly suggest that the link between mobile phones and brain tumours should no longer be regarded as a myth.
The "incubation time" or "latency" (i.e., the time from commencement of regular mobile phone usage to the diagnosis of a malignant solid brain tumour in a susceptible individual) may be in the order of 10-20 years.
It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking,and directly concerns all of us, particularly the younger generation, including very young children.

Cell Phone Radiation Effects, Brain Tumors and Children

With 3 billion cell phone users worldwide and more than 260 million in the United States alone—among them 46% of U.S. children aged 8–12, according to Nielsen Mobile figures released 10 September 2008—human exposure to low-energy radiation in the 800-to 2,000-megahertz range is at an all-time high. The most recent attempt to systematically review the epidemiologic evidence for increased risk of brain tumors related to cell phone use indicates that repercussions from this global experiment are coming to light. In a meta-analysis published in the May 2008 issue of the International Journal of Oncology, Swedish researchers found significant associations between long-term cell phone use and brain tumor risk. In July 2008 market research firm MultiMedia Intelligence reported that more than 16 million U.S. teens use cell phones.
“We found that cell phone use is linked to gliomas [malignant brain tumors] and acoustic neuromas [benign tumors of the brain's auditory nerve] and are showing up after only ten years,” says lead author Lennart Hardell, an oncologist and cancer epidemiologist at University Hospital in Örebro, Sweden. Specifically, for studies that included at least 10 years of exposure, there was a doubling in the risk of gliomas for ipsilateral (same-side) but not contralateral (opposite-side) exposures to the head (as reflected by which hand the subject typically used to hold his/her cell phone). A 2.4-fold increase in risk was seen for acoustic neuromas due to ipsilateral exposures, whereas no increased risk occurred for meningiomas (tumors that occur in the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord).

Stewart chaired the world's largest investigation into mobile phone safety. The $100 billion a year mobile phone industry asserts that there is no conclusive evidence of harmful effects as a result of electromagnetic radiation.
US scientists tested mobile phone-style radiation on more than 10,000 chicken embryos. Pregnant women have been warned to be wary of using mobile phones after it was found radiation produced by the devices caused defects in the chicken embryos. The cell phone industry continues to down-play the risk and defer to more research.
Children using mobile phones absorb as much as double the amount of radiation through their heads as adults. Dr Om Ghandi, a leading scientist and professor of electrical engineering at the University of Utah found that young children under 10 years of age could absorb radiation across their entire brain. He found that more radiation is able to go past the ear and into the head since a child's ear is thinner and the telephone is closer to the head. All it takes is two millimeters difference," Dr Ghandi said.
Until proven otherwise and technology becomes safe, children including teens should not use mobile phones, at all, because they are more at risk from the radiation, and their cell growth and brain wave activity are not yet stable. There is conclusive evidence that the phones have biological effects on humans even where the radio frequency or microwave radiation is emitted at very low levels.
Mobile phones and the new wireless technology could cause a "whole generation" of today's teenagers to go senile in the prime of their lives, research suggests. Professor Leif Salford, who headed the research at Sweden's prestigious Lund University, says "the voluntary exposure of the brain to microwaves from hand-held mobile phones" is "the largest human biological experiment ever".

Recently, New Media has reported a study showing the radiation from cell phones is so full of energy they can be used to cook eggs. In the experiment, researchers placed one egg in a porcelain cup (because it is easy to conduct heat), and put one cell phone on one side and another cell phone on the other. The researchers then called from one cell phone to another and kept the cell phones on after connecting.
During the first 15 minutes, nothing changed. After 25 minutes, however, the egg shell started to become hot and at 40 minutes, the surface of the egg became hard and bristled. Researchers found the protein in the egg had become solid although the egg yolk was still in liquid form. After 65 minutes, the whole egg was well cooked.
The study shows how scary cell phone radiation is. People should try to avoid use of cell phones. Although so far no one has proved the radiation from cell phones can cause something clinically significant. By the same token, there has been no one who can disprove the existence of such a risk.
Children should be forbidden from cell phone use because they still grow their brains and are particularly vulnerable to radiation.

Senator Ted Kennedy's diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor is, once again, stirring debate over the safety of cell phones. Kennedy's brain tumor, called a glioma, is the type critics have associated for years with the use of cell phones.
Prominent neurosurgeons have stated they do not use cell phones held next to their ears. I use it on the speaker-phone mode, said Dr. Vini Khurana, a prominent researcher and an associate professor of neurosurgery at the Australian National University. I do not hold it to my ear. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNNs chief medical correspondent and a neurosurgeon at Emory University Hospital admitted that, he too, used an earpiece.
CTIA the Wireless Association and the FDA both say that studies show cell phones are not a health risk. Other experts disagree. They point to research that indicates a link between cell phones and three types of tumors: glioma (the type Senator Kennedy has); cancer of a salivary gland near the ear called the parotid; and acoustic neuroma, which is a tumor found near the ear. An Israeli study published last year found a 58 percent increase in risk for parotid tumors among people who relied heavily on their cell phones. And a Swedish study found the risk for glioma and acoustic neuroma doubled after ten years of heavy use.
Since cell phones are relatively new, there hasnt been a chance for long-term studies that will settle the question of whether there is truly a link between cell phone use and brain tumors. Some critics express particular concern for children who begin using cell phones as kids and continue throughout their lives. More and more kids are using cell phones, said Dr. Paul Rosch, clinical professor of medicine and psychiatry at New York Medical College. They may be much more affected. Their brains are growing rapidly and their skulls are thinner.
Dr. Khurana admits that cell phones are convenient and can save lives in an emergency, but he says that there is a significant and increasing body of evidence for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumors, adding that malignant brain tumors are a life-ending diagnosis.
